Known locally as “The North’s Biggest Little Town”, Smooth Rock Falls is a bilingual community in which services are offered in both official languages, English and French.

Highway 655, starting in Driftwood (to the east), provides easy access to Timmins (100 kms south), the larger regional centre.
The town boasts an assortment of well-maintained recreational facilities with a broad range of pastimes. For example, in winter you can ride along over 1000 kms of wide, well-groomed snowmobile trails; go cross country skiing or ice fishing. Summertime offers boating, fishing, swimming and golfing.
It is located east of Kapuskasing, northeast of Timmins, south of Moosonee, and north of Iroquois Falls. It is about a one-hour drive from Timmins, the major city of the region.
It is the seat of Cochrane District.
The town's population is made up of approximately half anglophone and half francophone residents.
In the 2006 Census, Cochrane had a population of 5,487.
Cochrane is the home of the "TIM HORTON EVENTS CENTRE". Arena.
Most Canadians know the name Tim Horton; not all know that he was an elite National Hockey League player from Cochrane.
